Just realised yesterday I've been running #freebsd 14 alpha, I guess the time is coming to decide again whether or not I'll keep running CURRENT as a daily driver :-D (it is mostly *that* stable)

I remembered I hadn't done anything with the Twitter account, recent rumours regarding training AI models with user content reminded me I probably should.

Here are some funny / interesting things I found dealing with the archive:

C# bashing

Seriously, how on earth is there no decent DNS library already in the system?

Do I seriously have to re-implement DNS or get some third-party library to perform a simple DNS query that goes beyond getting an IP?

I see many people who have the right to vote this weekend will not exercise their right.
These people, being from my "progressive" bubble, would have likely voted non-retrograde, non-regressive parties. Also the people that say voting serves no purpose...

OTOH the phenomenon seen in e.g. Germany is that the far right does go to vote, en masse.

I guess, depending on who wins these elections, I might start being on the lookout for a new place of residence.

Woow, today I came across a potential client, whose company:

- returns 403 from the European Union
- bounces emails "based on Geographic Restrictions", from the European Union

This... Will be easy I guess.

#openbsd installer question: making a new install, I mistyped the IPv4 address and needed to edit it because the default gateway fell outside of the mistyped range.
So, is there a simple way to go back and edit a previous answer?

(ofc, the installer being as simple and fast as it is, I exited the install and started over, would like to know anyway :-D)

Experienced sysadmin tip:

Use these on your workstation machines:

alias brb=reboot
alias bye=poweroff

Getting used to these, will make reading this message a non-issue:
# bye
sh: bye: not found

(Also, do not work when tired)

Wasted 10 minutes to "Untyped function decorator obscures type of function", only to realise I was reading a PEP for #python 3.12 >,<...

https://peps.python.org/pep-0702/

Jeebus, do I really need a third party library to mark something as deprecated?

Luckily #twisted has me covered (wanted to use stdlib mostly, but hey): https://docs.twistedmatrix.com/en/stable/api/twisted.python.deprecate.html

Eleccions municipals

*sigh* a potential client was annoyed because our EU-VAT check is refusing their UK VAT number.

And I actually had to write "Since the UK left the EU, those VAT numbers are not recognised as valid, but we will gladly process the purchase manually".

Brexit things for years to come I guess.

Soooo, is it safe to use #freebsd CURRENT with ZFS again? :-D
(it looks like it, don't want to add to the Mailing list noise asking)

Would appreciate a binary yes/no if someone knows for sure ^^

WTH is wrong with #debian these days?
This must be the 5th time this year that a clean server install ends up having x11-common installed for no good reason.

Even the installation of the "server" flavour comes with some desktop environments pre-selected (hey, it's a server image?).

Oh well, TL;DR: nowadays these are a must on Debian:

APT::Install-Recommends "0";
APT::Install-Suggests "0";

I'm running against "device emulation initialization error: Operation not supported by device" using #freebsd's #bhyve from CURRENT today.

Does anyone know what it could be about? Recent changes to bhyve do not seem to bring me closer :-(.
